Several studies in India have revealed that lack of basic amenities like toilets, access to water and basic infrastructure creates an unwelcoming and non-conducive environment in government schools, leading to high rates of absenteeism, which results in children dropping out of school. It is the girl child who is affected the most by lack of such infrastructure.
CAF India is a strategic partner of Coca-Cola NDTV Support My School campaign, which was launched to work on revitalization of schools. The campaign that begun with Coca-Cola, NDTV and UN-habitat has now grown to include many partners. The approach adopted was to work on SanitationPLUS model involving NGOs, community members and private Sector (Golden Triangle). So in addition to new or revitalized structures, access to water was made an important component. In all, 5 components, depending on school, were revitalized -
- Access to sanitation
- Access to water
- Playing facilities
- Environmental upkeep & Rainwater harvesting (based on need)
- Partner led intervention
With help of strategic partners such as CAF India, Support My School has become of the biggest campaign of its kind in India. Through active engagement and leveraging various channels and through clutter breaking Live Television telethon, campaign reached out to millions and focused on making them aware on the issue and also how, together, it can be solved. The campaign has ignited a spirit of partnership in resolving this pressing issue of lack of sanitation, water and dilapidated schools.
