CAF India's approach towards the program is based on developing a holistic model, which emphasizes on the 'construction of toilets', not as an end to the problem but rather viewing it as a means to address the larger issues of education, health, hygiene, dignity and gender equality.
Pillar -1 Construction of Toilet Complexes
- Separate toilets and urinals for boys and girls with running water and hand washing facilities in schools
- Community Toilet Complexes as per the needs and requirements of the community
- Household toilets as per the needs and requirements of the household
Pillar - 2 Sanitation and Hygiene Education
- Raise awareness on sanitation and hygiene issues, menstrual hygiene, hand washing, etc. in schools and communities
- Organize puppet shows, street plays to promote sanitation and hygiene education
- Disseminate IEC material on sanitation and hygiene among school children and communities
Pillar - 3 Maintenance and Upkeep for Sustainability
- Engage school authorities, students, local government agencies, PRIs, Municipal authorities and local communities in maintenance and upkeep of toilets
- Cleaning and repairs
- Provision of hygiene supplies
Three Pillars of the Program
Pillar 1: Construction of Toilet Complexes
With the support of local implementing partners and other stakeholders, CAF India plans to construct and renovate toilet complexes in 1000 schools in phase I. A typical toilet complex will have 2 toilets and 3 urinals each for girls and boys with hand washing facility.
CAF India plans to construct cost effective individual toilets at household level. This will include planning, indicative designs, drawings, toilet complexes with various options for safe disposal systems of waste water, develop operation and maintenance arrangements. Each household will be provided with adequate knowledge on WASH to ensure ownership and sustainability.
Community Toilet Complexes
A community sanitary complex will include toilets, urinals and space for washing/bathing facilities depending on the needs of community. The community toilet complex will include operation and maintenance services to monitor the structure on regular basis.
Pillar 2: Sanitation and Hygiene Education
The program will promote effective hygiene practices through effective Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) on healthy practices like hand washing, encourage a green environment, waste management, discourage open defecations.
Development of IEC materials (innovative communication material like posters, leaflets, flipbook, handbook, comic booklets, learning games, video and other Information Communication Technology (ICT) tools.
Capacity building of teachers, community members, Panchayat Institutions, Elected Representatives, village functionaries etc.
Community awareness, sensitization and mobilization programs.
Pillar 3: Maintenance and Upkeep for Sustainability
The program will involve a range of stakeholders, including community members ,School Management Committees (SMC), Panchayati Raj Institutes (PRI), municipal authorities, teachers and children for sustainable sanitation outcomes.
Partnerships - Networking and linkages with government and other stakeholders will be established for promoting partnership, advocacy and synergy for enhancing convergence among key stakeholders.
