Uttarakhand Flood Relief 2016
Barely has Uttarakhand begun to find its feet after the disastrous flash floods of 2013, nature’s fury has wreaked havoc yet again, killing nearly 40 people and causing substantial loss to property and lives.
Heavy downpour triggered flash floods and landslides in Uttarakhand, flattening many villages and washing away houses. Many villages have been cut off from district centres due to the landslides and several people are still stuck under debris even as rescue operations are affected due to inclement weather.
CAF India has already been in touch with its partners to assess the gravity of the situation on the ground. Initial reports gathered by us indicate Chamoli, Pitoragarh, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Champawat, Almora and Pauri are the worst-affected districts in the state with many residential buildings along the banks collapsing, causing huge loss to lives, crops, property, household items, vehicles and livestock. According to reports analysed by CAF India, electricity has been cut off in many low-lying villages and people are struggling to meet their basic needs, indicating urgent need for external support.
The assessment was conducted based on on-site observation, transect walks, focus group discussions in relief camps and meetings with local government officials.
