Disaster Response Strategy
The project Skaksham is an outcome of the comprehensive rapid assessment conducted by CAF India to understand the challenges and develop a response strategy on the ground. The assessment included the intensive interactions with varied stakeholders including affected community members, local NGOs, local government authorities, business community, lodge owners, students, PWD engineers, Tehsildar and Sub-Divisional Magistrate and also recipients of relief that was provided by CAF-India. The assessment helped in detailed analysis of the requirements to rebuild their villages after the disaster.
The flash floods of 2013 devastated the downstream villages of Badrinath Valley. Pandukeshwar village was epicentre to witness unprecedented devastation to public, private property and precious Himalayan ecology of the valley. The breached embankments left community stranded and vulnerable to being washed away from any further heavy rains, which is a frequent occurrence in the valley. This needed immediate resurrection and protection. Project Shaksham strategically aligned its activity to building the protection wall.
CAF India entrusted NGO partner Uttaranchal Youth and Rural Development Centre as local partner to implement project “SHAKSHAM”.
UYRDC took every step in insuring the project mobility with keeping the priority of project beneficiaries in mind. These were channelized through facilitation, collective mobility, connecting government co-operation, extending training requirements as per beneficiary needs.
