Embracing Equity this Women’s Day
As we commemorate International Women’s Day, celebrating the power of women and their role in building the societies around the world, there are many who still face systematic subordination in India. This subordination comes in the form of accessing free and fair education, healthcare, nutrition, and our own understanding of division of labour. Despite making tremendous progress in allocating resources for health, education, infrastructure, skills, agriculture, there are multiple blind spots when it comes to addressing Equity for Women and Girls.
Needless to say, the pandemic has been a fragility multiplier, and the shadow pandemic further exposed the existing fractures in our societies. While the rest of the country moved towards digital education, many struggled to make the transition, girls particularly being hit the worst, again highlighting the digital disparity. It is also feared that many girls who dropped out for multiple reasons from schools during this time, such as digital divide, financial constraints, concerns over menstrual hygiene, availability of toilet, etc. might never be able to return to school again, and forced into early marriage, or child labour. While the full implication of the pandemic on education can be recognized only in future, it is important to mitigate some of the existing challenges that girls and women continue to face in accessing education and menstrual products.
With this intent, on this International Women’s Day CAF India is #EmbracingEquity and will be working to promote access to free education and providing menstrual hygiene kits for adolescent girls from economically backward communities in Delhi-NCR region in 10-12th Standard.
