J&K Flood Relief >> Present situation in Jammu & Kashmir

The ravaging floods that started on September 4, 2014 have brought life to a standstill in India’s ‘heaven on earth’ – Jammu & Kashmir. Roads, schools, hospitals, shops and religious establishment have been submerged since then. Thousands of villages have been inundated. Almost five lakh people have been rendered homeless and are seeking refuge due to this unfortunate catastrophe. Red alert has been issued in South Kashmir's Pulwama area and the low-lying areas in Srinagar as the Jehlum River has breached its embankment at many places in South Kashmir. Nearly 80 transport aircraft and helicopters of the Indian Air Force and Army have been pressed into service. This is the worst flood situation that Jammu & Kashmir has witnessed in last 100 years.

Thousands of people are still trapped in their homes in Srinagar with little or no food, water and medicines. Here are some latest updates*:

• Nearly 215 people have died
• Almost 2500 villages have been inundated in both the Kashmir and Jammu regions.
• Road and mobile communication networks have been damaged.
• 96,000 people have been rescued so far by the Armed Forces and the NDRF from the flood-hit areas of Jammu and Kashmir. Arrangements are being made to provide food, water and essential medicines to people affected by the floods.
