CAF - Right to Sanitation  >> Our Experience

Sanitation is one of our key sectors that we are working in, and in the last decade, as part of our Public-Private-Community initiative, we have successfully managed implementation of several collaborative, pro poor projects that have addressed sanitation issues, facilitated service delivery for the urban and rural communities and built their capacities. These projects have largely and regularly been supported by private sector, individual, institutional and UN agencies.

Support My School Campaign
Taking forward its mandate to mobilize resources for community development and engage meaningfully on social issues, CAF India initiated the ‘Support My School Campaign’ from 2010 to 2014 with the support of Coca-Cola, UN-Habitat, Pearson Foundation, Tata Teleservices, HCCBPL, Global Water Challenge (Merck), and H20 for Life. The campaign was designed to intervene on the poor conditions of schools in India, including, lack of water, poor sanitation (toilet facilities) and hygiene, ill-equipped sports infrastructure and landscaping. The overriding goal of the campaign was to ensure that schools have affordable access to water and sanitation facilities which will catalyze improvements in child health, learning achievement, and productivity, especially that of the girl child. The campaign also aligned with the Millennium Development Goals and targets of reducing the population of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation by half by 2015.

The nationwide campaign brought together the expertise and resources of 11 donors, over 50 institutional partners revitalizing 364 schools touching the lives of approximately 1 lac children. The campaign is spread across 17 states. In the course of its duration, the campaign supported the construction and renovation of around 1400 toilets and urinals for girls and boys and supported 91 rainwater harvesting structures, 25 submersible pumps, and 27 bore wells and 332 drinking water points, 61 water filters, and 195 overhead tanks. In addition to this the project established 91 libraries in different schools.
