How Devesh’s determination transformed his Disability to Ability
Devesh has Autism - a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired social interaction, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. He was part of Computer Training for Skills Development at Tamana, a CAF India partner.
Jyoti is one of the many street children being provided education and rehabilitation support by CHETNA – an NGO partner of CAF India through the ‘Give As You Earn’ program. Every year, CHETNA works with thousands of street children and empowers them through education. Here is the inspiring story of Jyoti in her own words -
Abandoned in life, little 8 year old Preethi becomes a story of hope
Preethi - this little girl in one of Teach for India’s classes is a happy child with a story that constantly inspires! She makes people believe that good things do happen. Tragedies have occurred one after the other in her life yet she still continues to smile and sets an example for other kids to learn from. Her faith on her didi's (Teach For India Fellows) and people she loves is immense and she knows with them around, she will be alright!
Sandeep was only 7 years old when he lost his mother. Soon after, his father too passed away after which Sandeep and his brother had no option but to come to Delhi to live with his Uncle. Both the brothers tried to support themselves with whatever work they could find. They were also physically tortured by their uncle who would take away the little money that they earned. Unable to cope with the growing physical abuse, Sandeep’s elder brother ran away to Mumbai leaving him alone with his Uncle. Scared and without help, Sandeep too decided run away and started living at the New Delhi Nizamuddin Railway Station.
Sri Lekha was diagnosed with AIDS at a very early age; her parents had died of AIDS. She survived through a long period of isolation and social boycott, abandoned by her relatives, and at one point in time she even struggled to find food and water. But she never let her courage fade, despite a very weak immune system, which led her to contract Tuberculosis (TB), making her extremely weak.
